SIMPLE WORDS

Simple words are thought, spoken, and written to communicate clearly and plainly.  Simple words build simple phrases, simple phrases build simple truths, and simple truths build simple theologies.

I am a simple man, nothing exquisite, just a man who simply wants to love and follow JESUS. I think simply, speak simply, and write simply. My simple mind is unable to grasp heavenly things on its own. Praise be to God who made His Gospel known in a simple way for me to understand.

Yet even my simple words are tainted by sin. Even if my words are clear, they proceed from a fallen mind, mouth and hand. My words are a reflection who I am. Jesus said it is...

"out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45)

and I would even add: the mind thinks, the hands move, the feet go, and the eyes look. How is it that we who have crooked hearts and crooked speech can approach God? Ecclesiastes 5:2 says,

"Be not rash with your mouth , nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few."

That puts things into perspective pretty quick. God is in heaven and you are on earth little human, so choose your words carefully. Think before you speak; ponder before you pray. Understand to Whom you are praying. Although we are like Him, He is not like us.

Here in America we have a law the ensures the freedom of speech, meaning your voice will be heard and not suppressed. We have taken this to mean that we can say whatever we want to and not get in trouble for it. In so doing, we as a society have become careless with our words. We approach God like he is our bro. It is true that...

"we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus," (Hebrews 10:19)

"in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in Him." (Ephesians 3:12)

Approach God boldly and confidently but also humbly and reverently.

How do you speak with God? What are your words like? Are your words simple or do you ramble to God? Are your words specific and clear? How do you speak of God to others?

If you are a child of God, then the Gospel should be the most clearly explainable concept you ever speak of in life. You should know the ins and outs of the Gospel better than anything else in life. You should know the Gospel better and more deeply than anything that you are most passionate about. Your Redeemer and your redemption should be your passion.

When someone asks you about the Gospel or when you evangelize, do you enter into a 10 minute regurgitation of facts that you learned from Sunday School? Or do you use simple words, such as "I have been redeemed by Jesus," "Christ is all to me." Do you the know the Gospel truths in such way that you are able to speak of them clearly and naturally?

Have you even come to Jesus for salvation? Are you found in Him today?

"Few seem to realize how much they need a savior. Few seem to understand how thoroughly they are indebted to Him. Few seem to comprehend how much they need Him every day. Few seem to feel how simply and like a child they ought to hang their souls on Him. Few seem to be aware of how full of love he is to his poor weak people, and how ready to help them, and how few therefore seem to know the peace and joy and strength and power to live a godly life, which is to be had in Christ." - J. C. Ryle

If we simplify the Gospel, does that take away from God and His immenseness? We should strive to be able to process everything in order to explain it clearly to others, especially those who don't yet know Jesus. We should read beyond our normal ability to push ourselves to think better. We should spend time meditating on Him who is infinite and beyond all words. And at the end of the day use simple words to explain what we have come to know.

"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger" - James 1:19
